Barrel District: A Cathedral City Staple Since 2019
A Community Anchor
Since opening in 2019, just a couple of months before the pandemic, Barrel District has been a constant pillar of the Cathedral City community, drawing in regulars from across the Coachella Valley. Barrel District is Cathedral City’s most reliable gastropub, known for its craft kitchen, diverse menu, and strong beer program. It’s also been a personal favorite of mine ever since they opened.
Built on Hard Work and Vision
It was a concept built on vision and hard work. Rene and Adele Alcala are two of the hardest-working people you’ll ever meet. Rene once told me he opened his first restaurant as a secure job for himself, and he soon ended up being the server, busser, bartender, cook, and dishwasher. It’s an energy you still see today, as both Rene and Adele remain heavily involved in their restaurants.
They already had considerable success with the smaller Bubba’s Bones and Brews location in Cathedral City — a business built on excellent barbecue and an expansive craft beer program — and Barrel District was their opportunity to take things a step further.
Introducing the Gastropub Concept to the Valley
At that time, “gastropub” was a fairly unfamiliar term in the Coachella Valley, and there was nothing like it in Cathedral City. Bubba’s was the closest comparison, but with more of a café/diner feel. Barrel District was their chance to expand that idea and bring something fresh to the area.
“The vision when we opened Barrel District was a casual gastropub with a relaxed vibe,” says Adele. “A place for locals to have different offerings than what was in Cathedral City at the time.”
Early Momentum
It resonated quickly. Cathedral City didn’t have a great deal of options or diversity then, and locals caught onto the place fast. The menu was approachable and affordable, as was the craft beer program — especially during the daily happy hour. And it became a novelty for residents in Desert Hot Springs (where I lived at the time), Palm Springs, and the central and east valley cities.

A Menu Built for Everyone
I was initially drawn in by the beer program, but the food was always excellent and kept me coming back. It was appealing, original, and unique — everything you appreciate from a craft kitchen. The same had always been true at Bubba’s, where the beer program ran deep and the barbecue was consistently great.
At Barrel District it’s not just the quality of the food but the diversity. Adele once told me she’d always been frustrated choosing restaurants with her family. As a vegan, she struggled to find places that appealed to different diets. Barrel District makes that its strength. There are options across entrées, burgers, salads, tacos, sandwiches, pastas, small bites, and a dedicated vegan menu that runs close to 30 items. Alongside familiar gastropub staples, there are plenty of original choices — Sesame Crusted Ahi Burger, Kalua Pork Tacos, Avocado Caprese Salad, Baja Lobster & Shrimp Quesadilla, and a Candied Walnut & Pear Flatbread sit alongside more familiar items.
“Over the years the concept has not changed,” Adele told me. “However, our menu has expanded by incorporating new trends and fresh ideas.”

Regular Favorites
I’ve explored all aspects of the Barrel District menu over the past seven years and never been disappointed. My last visit revolved around three regular favorites. First, the Bruschetta — a bright, fresh mix of heirloom tomatoes, basil, and roasted garlic tossed in aged balsamic and olive oil. Served with fresh baguette slices, it’s refreshing and lively, with multiple flavor elements that dance across the palate.
The Avocado Tacos are a great vegan option that anyone would enjoy — thick, crisply battered avocado bites served perfectly crunchy with house sauce, salsa, cabbage, tomato, and cilantro. Another regular choice for me is the Barrel District Smokehouse Burger. The patty is perfectly charred with great texture, and the thick-cut bacon, tomato and onions add substance, as does the arugula and garlic aioli. And I do have to mention that Barrel District has some of the best French fries around — uniquely crispy without losing softness inside.
Pizza and Beyond
I often eat the pizza here and they do a great job too. They have good-quality crust, freshly sourced toppings, and some creative creations. The vegetarian Coachella is a good choice, topped with fresh tomatoes, black olives, artichokes, mushrooms, onion, basil, and avocado. The Seafood Pizza features lobster and shrimp. And there are so many other great things I’ve enjoyed over the years — IPA Fish & Chips, Avocado Flatbread, Poke Nachos, and the Sticky Toffee Cake.

Seven Years Later
Seven years after opening, Barrel District is still going strong with its fresh, creative, and broad menu. The vibe is relaxed and familiar, but well curated and refined. On my recent visit — my first in about a year — it hadn’t lost its touch. Barrel District is still riding strong with its elevated craft food and bar program.
Rene and Adele are also working on a sushi restaurant in Palm Desert. More information to follow.
